I have MSA/C & my voice is getting rather light.  I was wondering has used  the Dynavox talking device.  If so, how did you like it?

Hello Paula,

I see your post - do you get speech therapy?  This will help since it will also give you advice on your breathing and swallowing, which also affect your muscles.

My husband was diagnosed with Shy Drager last year since then they've switched it to the more common term MSA.

My husband was diagnosed with Shy Drager last year since then they've switched it to the more common term MSA.
They say the prognosis is 5-7 years.  I'm totally devastated.
Can this be possible.  I do notice that his voice is not the same as it was.  What is this Dynovox talking device.
I'm sorry I guess I'm answering a question with a question.

Hi folks, my sister, age 75, was diagnosed with SD a couple of years ago and her speech is quickly deteriorating. Her voice is raspy and it sounds as if she working with a thick tongue. She is getting more and more difficult to understand -- especially on the phone -- and is deeply frustrated by her increasing inability to communicate verbally. I've been researching speech assistive devices for her and found one called Textspeak talking keyboards http://textspeak.com/talktype.htm ... they have demos posted and it looks interesting and is really quite reasonably priced ($530). Does anyone have any experience with this product or can anyone offer any other suggestions. Thanks.

Hello - my mum (who was diagnosed 3 to 4 years ago) has used something similar to text - speak systems but unfortunately it is too hard for her to press they keys as her movement is so sharp and rigid. Does any one have any ideas on using flash cards or something similar? Her voice is so quiet - pretty much silent! And it is becoming very frustrating for her to communicate with us. Any help is great - thanks

KT,

The dynovox or devices like them do work for some well , but as in your mother case when movement becomes a problem then the communication boards are needed. I have searched for sometime on the different comunication device and boards. I haven't used the EZ Picture Board , but  If my husband was still living I think it would work the best for what we would of needed in a communication board.

It seems the  EZ Picture Board would make easy communication using the board and would work well for what you would need it for. It has a pain chart so you can know if your mother has any pain and the other side has a list of " I am" with pictures she can point to & "I want " to point to along with A-Z so she can spell out something and has numbers. It also comes in different languages at the same site http://www.bindependent.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=snc100 .

You could also make one that would be something on the same order. You can make  a board by cutting out of pictures from magazines etc and glue those to a card or poster board, just make sure you  use permanent marker so it wont run.
